Sources and Use of Medicare Enrollment Information

Conceptual understanding of the importance of a denominator file for Medicare research is essential to proper design and effective use of the Medicare administrative data.

• the source of the data in the Master Beneficiary Summary File
• who is included in the file
• a detailed description of the contents of the file, including variables used for:
  • patient identification
  • demographic information
  • tracking eligibility for receiving particular services under Medicare
