Measuring Hospitalizations and Identifying Facility Providers

This video is one segment in a series of videos from ResDAC’s Introduction to the Use of the Medicare Encounter Data for Research.

This presentation includes a description of the hospitalization information available for Medicare Advantage Beneficiaries by comparing key variables and inclusion criteria of the Inpatient Encounter Files to the MedPAR. Because the Inpatient Encounter files only contain the National Provider Identifier (NPI) for hospitals, a method to characterize the type of hospital using linkage to the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) public use file is described.
