TAX_NUM

The federal taxpayer identification number (TIN) that identifies the physician/practice/supplier to whom payment is made for the line item service.

This number may be an employer identification number (EIN) or social security number (SSN).

Comments

For DME claims, all 10 digits are populated. The first 9 digits represent the EIN or SSN, and the final (rightmost) digit indicate the type of provider ID that is used (3=EIN and 1=SSN). For all other claim types, only 9 digits of the field are populated.
