The federal taxpayer identification number (TIN) that identifies the physician/practice/supplier to whom payment is made for the line-item service on the noninstitutional claim.

This number may be an employer identification number (EIN) or social security number (SSN).

Comments

For DME claims, all 10 digits are populated. The first 9 digits represent the EIN or SSN, and the final (rightmost) tenth digit indicate the type of provider ID that is used (reference the DMERC_LINE_SUPPLR_TYPE_CD for these values). For all other claim types, only 9 digits of the field are populated.
