The Health and Retirement Study (HRS) is available in the form of several different data products, including HRS survey data that has been linked to Medicare claims data for HRS participants. In order to request the HRS-Medicare linked data, researchers will first need to get preliminary approval from HRS. The HRS website has information about the required documentation. Once preliminary approval is received from HRS, researchers should submit a full Research Identifiable (RIF) data request packet to ResDAC for review, including documentation of the preliminary approval from HRS. A list of the required documents for a RIF request can be found on the ResDAC website. After a ResDAC TA reviews the packet and is finalized by the researcher, the request will be forwarded to the CMS Privacy Board for review. If the request is approved by the CMS Privacy Board, HRS will be notified and the request will be processed.
The Process for Requesting HRS-Medicare Linked Data
Researchers who are interested in requesting the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) data linked to Medicare data will need to go through both a HRS and CMS review of their request. This document provides a brief overview of that process.
